We here at AWE believe that enjoying a carefully crafted cocktail is one of the finer pleasures in life. As the summer heat begins to set in, there’s no greater time to enjoy a light and refreshing beverage with friends. Today, we’re sharing a recipe for one of our favorite classic cocktails, the Basil Gimlet. This drink has a surprisingly sweet and tart flavor that makes it an ideal summer refreshment! It’s super easy to make and especially fun for those who like to grow their own fresh Basil. As a bonus, we’re sharing an easy recipe for Basil simple syrup. What You’ll Need:
7 organic basil leaves
1/2 ounce homemade Basil simple syrup (recipe below)
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
1 1/2 ounces gin
The key to crafting the perfect Basil Gimlet is making sure you’re able to get enough Basil flavor in your mix. To do this, we’ll use an old bartender’s trick. Just grab all but one of your fresh basil leaves and clap them in the palm of your hands. It may seem a little silly, but we promise this technique will ensure that you’ll be able to savor all that Basil goodness!
After that, you’ll want to combine your Basil leaves, simple syrup, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Pummel the leaves with a muddler (or spoon) to further release the Basil oils. Add in your gin and ice and put the lid to your cocktail shaker back on.
Now that you’ve added all of your ingredients to the closed cocktail shaker, it’s time to shake it! We recommend 15 good “over-the-head” shakes to make sure your drink is thoroughly mixed. After mixing, simply open the lid and pour your drink into a cocktail glass. Finally, take your remaining Basil leaf and neatly place it on top of your drink for a handsome little garnish.

Making your own simple syrup is not necessary for mixing up your own Basil Gimlet, but it’s a fun and easy way to add an extra homemade touch to your cocktails.
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup of washed basil leaves
This recipe calls for more fresh Basil leaves, which makes it ideal for someone who has their very own Basil plant. Just add your sugar, water, and fresh Basil to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer on medium heat. Stir occasionally until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool. Then pour the syrup through a fine sieve into a resealable container. That’s all there is to it!
You’ll want to let this mix cool in the fridge for a few hours before you use it for any drink recipes. It’s also a good idea to go ahead and use this syrup within a week or so for optimal freshness.
