Artist Inspiration: Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy

“At it’s most successful, my “touch” looks into the heart of nature; most days I don’t even get close. These things are all part of a transient process that I cannot understand unless my touch is also transient; only in this way can the cycle remain unbroken and the process be complete.”
-Andy Goldsworthy

The work of Andy Goldsworthy has been praised over the years for it’s celebration of the random beauty of nature and it’s critique on our idea of when and where art takes place. His use of shape, color, and his transformation of space is truly “AWE-inspiring!” Though Goldsworthy’s work is seen by very few in person, the photographic documentation of his “Land Art” has inspired the masses. I can only imagine the feeling of stumbling across one of these beautiful displays during an afternoon hike. peace, love & AWE

First introduced this month more than 54 years ago, the peace sign remains an internationally recognized symbol among the young and young at heart. The “fork” in the middle of the circle depicts ‘nuclear disarmament’ using the letters ‘N’ and ‘D’ from the naval code of semaphore. The circle itself represents the concept of totality and completeness so that the image as a whole symbolizes complete nuclear disarmament.

Here’s a look at some of our favorite pieces of peace sign decor:

At west End's junkyard and vine peace sign wall hangings

Lids from tomato paste drums were re-purposed to create the funky set of three recycled peace signs on the left. If your decor has a more earthy feel to it, the handcrafted twig peace sign would make an excellent addition!
